We gathered with a simple but weighty reminder, one that many of us have heard before, yet were now being called to truly understand and live out.

From the very beginning, there was a central truth:

We are not meant to blend in, we are meant to shine.

And yet, we began to ask ourselves honestly, in what ways have we tried to hide anyway?

What are the “lampshades” we’ve placed over our lives? Fear? Shame? Insecurity? The need to be accepted?

We reflected on how easy it is to dim what God has already made bright. Not because the light isn’t there but because we choose, consciously or unconsciously, to cover it.

But light was never designed to be hidden.

We were reminded that light comes from God, and if we remain in Him, we will always find what is for us. There is no need to compete, compare, or shrink. What He has placed inside of us is intentional—in each and every one of us.

And as one body in Christ, we do not shine alone.

There was a deep emphasis on community, that when you surround yourself with people rooted in Christ, it becomes difficult to remain in darkness. Light spreads. It influences. It transforms.

If you are constantly around light, darkness loses its place.

This understanding didn’t remain theoretical, we were led to live it out.

We stepped outside the comfort of our gathering and went into the North York Central Library, intentionally choosing to be light in a public space. We spoke to people from different walks of life, listened to their stories, and shared the good news of the gospel. Some conversations were light. Others were deeply personal.

But when we came back together, a pattern became clear.

Many people’s experiences with Christ had been shaped not just by doctrine, but by how Christians treated them.

That realization sat with us.

It reminded us that our lives are not neutral. The way we speak, the way we act, the way we love, it all matters.

Because whether we realize it or not, we are representing Christ.

“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father”

Matthew 5:14-16 (NLT)

And as beautifully expressed in The Passion Translation (TPT):

“So don’t hide your light! Let it shine brightly before others, so that your commendable works will shine as light upon them, and then they will give their praise to your Father in heaven.”

We were also reminded that light does not lose its brightness by illuminating others. There is no shortage. No competition. When you carry the light of Christ, you can pour into others freely.

So the question remains:

Where has God called you to be a light that you’ve chosen to hide? What lampshades have you placed over what He has given you?

We ended with a deeper understanding, that wherever we go, we are called to fully occupy that space as light. Not partially. Not dimly. But fully.

Because this light is not ours, it is from Christ.

And because of that, it cannot be overcome.

This was more than a message, it was a reminder:

Do not hide your light. Not out of fear. Not out of shame. Not out of doubt.

Stay in Christ. Walk in Him.

And as you do, you will come into the full awareness of who you are—light in a world that desperately needs it.
